When I talk to you at a party

by Nidal Morrison

Blink. Don’t stare. Look down. Look up. Don’t mention Edward Snowden. Blink again. Shift
your weight. Mention the weather. Tap your fingers against your thighs. “And how was your
day?” By God don’t mention Edward Snowden. Keep shifting your weight. Recite Pi. They’ll
think you’re smart. Don’t recite Pi. They’ll think you’re weird. Nod your head. Agree with them.
Everyone likes an agreeable person. Be perfect. Don’t be perfect. No one likes perfection.
Mention a flaw. Keep tapping your fingers. “My number is 6099551011”. Wave goodbye. Move
your hand twice. Walk away. Don’t skip. Don’t run. Regret everything. Do it again.
